The English Teacher by R K Narayan
As they say , to learn history, read the books written in that period. Having an interest in history from childhood, R K Narayan's books gave me a getaway to the ordinary lives of a new independent India.
His stories are mainly based in an imaginary town called Malgudi in the southern India. His stories talks about the lives of ordinary people who are adjusting to the changing world. The traditions and the orthodoxy are well told through the characters in the story in a very beautiful way.
If you are a classic lover and greatly look at the composition and the structure of the words, then I guarantee you not to miss his stories.
The English Teacher by R K Narayan is one such beautiful work. The story is about an English teacher working in the Albert Mission College in Malgudi called Krishnan.
Having been away from his wife and daughter, he decides to live his marital bliss in a small rented house following his parents and parents-in-law's decision. When everything is going perfectly and beautiful, this small happy family meets with a tragedy.
At a time when men are forced to remarry and are doubted on their ability to look after the children, Krishnan remains devoted to his dead wife. He even takes the responsibility of his child.
The destiny has it's own ways as Krishnan receives a letter from an unknown person and meets a new friend who is the schoolmaster of his daughter.
This changes his routine and learns about more exciting things. Will Krishnan develop psychic abilities to contact his deceased wife? Will krishnan leave his job in college to follow his dreams? How will he look after his only little child?
The story also highlights on the society and the way they are coping up in the modern world where everything is changing. Any book lover will surely fall in love with the story as the master storyteller has spinned the tragedy in an enchanting way. And of coarse I highly recommend this book. It is a modern literature and the choice of words and the structure of sentences are very beautifully expressed and it contains no vulgarity.
